Project Overview

What PatentSDG Explorer is all about.

PatentSDG Explorer is a web application designed to visualize and analyze patent data specifically related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It provides an interactive dashboard showcasing trends, distributions, and highlights of innovations contributing to a sustainable future.

Our goal is to make complex patent information accessible and understandable, enabling users to track progress, identify key areas of innovation (or lack thereof), and understand the global landscape of sustainable technology development as reflected in patent filings.

Data Source

Where our information comes from.

The primary data source for PatentSDG Explorer is the publicly available patent database maintained by the European Patent Office (EPO). We utilize specific classifications and keywords associated with the UN SDGs to filter and categorize relevant patent applications.

Data is periodically updated to reflect the latest filings and publications. While we strive for accuracy, the classification of patents related to SDGs can be complex and involve interpretation.

Technology & Development

The tech stack behind the explorer.

PatentSDG Explorer is built using modern web technologies:

  • Framework: Next.js (App Router) with React and TypeScript for a performant and type-safe frontend.
  • Styling: Tailwind CSS for utility-first styling, combined with Shadcn/ui components for pre-built, accessible UI elements.
  • Data Visualization: Chart.js and Recharts (via Shadcn Charts) for creating interactive charts and graphs.
  • Deployment: Hosted on a cloud platform (e.g., Vercel, Firebase Hosting).
  • AI Features: Genkit for potential future integration of AI-powered insights or analysis (if applicable).
